Choices

It happens all the time.

In front of you are A and B.

“Choose,” says the Voice of Authority. “You have a choice: A or B.”

How many choices do you have?

The Voice of Authority said a choice. One.

But the Voice of Creativity says otherwise.

“You always have more choices,” it tells you.

“You could choose A. That’s a choice. You could choose B. That’s another choice.

“You could choose A and B. That’s a third. You could choose neither. That’s a fourth.

“But I said there was only one choice,” says the Voice of Authority. “I said the choice is A or B.”

“No,” says the Voice of Creativity to the Voice of Authority, “that’s your choice. That’s the choice you have offered. I offer more choices.”

“What?” You ask.

“You don’t choose what you get,” the Voice of Creativity says to you. “What you get is not up to you. It’s not in your power. But what you choose is always in your power. Don’t give that power away.

“You can choose what you aim at,” Creativity says. “You can choose what you aspire to. What you work for. No one but you can take those choices from you, but you can give them up.

“Don’t,” the Voice of Creativity concludes.

“Choose!” Demands the Voice of Authority.

“I choose publish this,” I say.

“That’s not one of the choices I offered,” says the Voice of Authority.

“But it’s the one I’m making,” I say. And I press publish.
