Hanukkapella
Alyssa and Kon went to see Rockapella, an acapella group, and I wanted to hear their sound.
I found their site online then started listening to other acapella groups, eventually listening to a lot of Jewish acapella. Apparently, Jewish acapella is a thing.
Here are some of my favorites:
Shir Soul
This is a Hannukah medley by a New York Jewish acapella group, Shir Soul
Dreidel
For those who don’t know how to play Dreidel, and can’t decode the symbols on the faces:
If נ (nun) is facing up, the player does nothing.
If ג (gimel) is facing up, the player gets everything in the pot.
If ה (hei) is facing up, the player receives/gets half of the pieces in the pot. If there are an odd number of pieces in the pot, the player takes half the pot rounded up to the nearest whole number.
If ש (shin) or פ (pe) is facing up, the player adds one of their game pieces to the pot (sometimes accompanied by the chant “shin, shin, put one in”[19]). In some game versions, a Shin results in adding three game pieces to the pot, one for each stem of the letter shin (ש).
Six13
Here’s an acapella Hamilton cover by six13. I’ve set the video start with the song I like best, but there are a couple of good ones before that, starting at 0:24 into the video.
And here’s their Bohemian Channukah
The Maccabeats
And then there’s the Maccabeats.
Schlock Rock
And finally the Maccabeats and Schlock Rock put together this song:
